Question about Traveling around Europe..?
I am currently a student in the netherlands from Americ via an exchange program until Decemeber.
I am already paying quite a bit of money for a place to stay and I would like to travel around Europe on the weekends (1-2day trips) for AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.
If I go on a one day trip, I obviously dont want to be on a bus for 8 hours getting to that destination. For a one day trip, I would like to spend about 6-8 hours in that country.
Can anyone Please suggest how I can get the best deal?
I have looked up ryanair.com
and eurolines and
everything is pricey if im trying to leave from the netherlands!
GRR.
I would like to visit amsterdam,germany,and paris…
Can someone please suggest something? Also, i will be traveling alone, so I dont need big family packages. Thn
When I was in college, I studied in England for a year and traveled extensively; it was expensive then, and I can only imagine how expensive it must be now.
I found that travel by rail was much easier and faster than buses. Look into a Young Persons railcard, or student travel discounts. Eurorail passes can be quite pricey, but you used to be able to get various passes that were good for months at a time (which is great if you’ll be taking multiple trips over a period of time).
Try consulting a student travel agency. There was an STA travel branch at my university, and they were able to find me good deals, answer questions, and advise me about deals for students and under-25s. They also have a comprehensive website (this is their American site): http://www.statravel.com/
Also, check out some good guidebooks. I highly recommend the Rough Guides–they’ve taken me around the world and back, and have never steered me wrong. They have a wide selection of travel guides, including books for individual cities (like Amsterdam & Paris). In addition to helping you get the most out of your visit, they have tips for budget & student travelers (including hostel listings, travel deals, and prices for meals and attractions). Spend some time in your local bookstore, or look at their website:

If you’re going to be staying overnight, stay in a hostel. In fact, research them ahead of time, just in case! You can save a lot of money by staying in hostels–they are cheap, safe, and you meet a lot of interesting people.
Good luck, and bon voyage!
